Alipes

I am keeping 3 Alipes grandidieri integer communal since 5 january 2005 without any problems at all. It started out as a breeding attempt but after I put 2 together I immediately noticed that they were extremely calm. They seemed to enjoy each others compagny and I decided to keep them communal. Because I didn't know the difference between male and female I housed 3 together in a 40cm x 20cm x 20cm container. Some months later it turned out there were 2 females and 1 male.

Since I am keeping them together both females have had eggs twice and all three centipedes molted. Everytime I check on them I find all three under the same piece of cork just laying on top of each other. The few times 1 was missing it was when a female had eggs. From the moment a female had eggs she retreated under another piece of cork and she blocked the entrances. After the pedelings left her she returned to the other two without any problems.

Some tips for anyone that thinks about keeping alipes communal. The first thing is to observe them when you put them together. If they just lay down together you can try it but if they show any other behaviour then that I wouldn't do it. Secondly make sure there are enough hiding places and always make sure there's enough to eat.
